The Playtime Sportfishing Experience
Kailua-Kona has a fish with your name on it, and Playtime Sportfishing is built to put you on it. Guided by Captain Shawn, a lifelong angler with deep roots in Hawaii and Alaska, you gain decades of local knowledge of Kona’s currents, ledges, and pelagic migration routes.
Target Species & Techniques
Depending on seasonal runs, you will target Pacific Blue Marlin, Striped Marlin, Shortbill Spearfish, Yellowfin Tuna (Ahi), Wahoo (Ono), and Mahi Mahi using proven methods:
- Heavy and light tackle offshore trolling
- Deep jigging and live-baiting
- Saltwater fly fishing (by prior request; bring your custom fly setup)
Vessel & Amenities
- Vessel: 28-foot Shamrock sportfisher accommodating up to 4 passengers
- Rigging: Heavy-duty outriggers, downriggers, and a dedicated fighting chair
- Comfort: Private marine toilet (head) on board and sheltered seating
- Gear Included: Commercial-grade rods, reels, tackle, and custom Hawaiian trolling lures
- Crew: Captain and experienced First Mate (customary mate tip: 10%–20%)
What to Bring: Sunglasses, wide-brim hat, reef-safe lotion sunscreen (non-spray), and your favorite food or drinks. Bottled water is provided. Beer and wine are welcome in moderation (no glass or hard liquor please). Child-sized safety life vests are aboard, though personal fitted vests for young children are welcome.

“The trip was excellent. The captains did a fantastic job of getting multiple lines in the water to maximize our trolling efforts. They kept an eye out for birds feeding on bait fish as well as tuna feeding on the surface. When setups were not getting hits, they adapted quickly. Towards the end, BAM—Fish On! We landed a ~120 lb Ahi tuna. Highly recommend these guys!”
